Re: Setting up negative binomial counting model in runmlwin

Unfortunately we don't have many resources covering negative binomial models in MLwiN. You can find some information on https://www.bristol.ac.uk/cmm/software/mlwin/mlwin-resources.html#discrete however I don't believe that this includes worked examples. Setting up these models in runmlwin should ta...

Re: mcmc model stops running

When you specify more than one chain in R2MLwiN each estimated chain is sent to a child R process so that they can be run in parallel. This can result in status messages not being sent back to the main R instance for display. You can check whether this is the cause by temporarily changing nchains ba...

Re: level 1 variance poisson model

To get the right answers the data will need to be sorted (or you could potentially turn on the xc option as you are using MCMC). This should be as simple as: dataset <- dataset[order(dataset$region, dataset$household), ] Setting sort.force to TRUE is supposed to do this for you within the function. ...

Re: level 1 variance poisson model

If you look at the code for the runMLwiN function at https://github.com/r-forge/r2mlwin/blob/master/R2MLwiN/R/runMLwiN.R you will see that the first message comes from line 601 and is only triggered if the levID option has been set. By default this is NULL and your syntax doesn't appear to set the o...

Re: level 1 variance poisson model

Other than having < instead of <- in your second line, which shouldn't have an effect on the model, I can't see anything wrong with your specification. Can you check that example 11.3 in chapter 11 of the MCMC guide replication examples on https://www.bristol.ac.uk/cmm/software/r2mlwin/examples/ wor...

Re: Imputation to level 2 variable: vary within group?

Thank you very much for confirming this, it does sound like the problem is somewhere within the Matlab code then. The Matlab documentation I linked previously suggests that the data read should remain in double precision, however this documentation is for Matlab 2021a whereas Realcom runs under the ...

Re: "invalid name" - runmlwin with MacOS and STATA 15

Could you check that the version it is using actually matches the one that you downloaded with the following command?: which runmlwin As I don't believe that the code in your log file: - local mlwinversion `majorver'.`minorver' = local mlwinversion .. . - if "`mlwinversion'" ~= "...&q...

Re: Can you stop MLwiN from popping up?

You could try using the scripting-only command line version of MLwiN by setting your MLwiN path to mlnscript.exe from mlwin.exe and see if that works any better.

Re: Bootstrap runmlwin

If you wanted to avoid cross you could probably do the calculation in Mata, as in my previous example, but this is a bit more complicated. George's code already reduces the size of the dataset used in the prediction by throwing away duplicate combinations in the variables of interest (the duplicates...

Re: Bootstrap runmlwin

Here are some answers to your questions from George: Why is thinning = 5? I understand that every fifth result is stored but I am not sure I understand why it is done. Should (burnin(#) and chain(#) be increased from the default? To reduce the size of the resulting saved file to make data manipulati...
