Hi,
I wonder how using MLwiN 2.29 for MCMC estimation with the runmlwin module for Stata should be exactly cited.
On the website of the University of Bristol (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/cmm/software/mlwin/refs.html) I find the following information on citing MLwiN:
MLwiN Version 2.1
Rasbash, J., Charlton, C., Browne, W.J., Healy, M. and Cameron, B. (2009) MLwiN Version 2.1. Centre for Multilevel Modelling, University of Bristol.
Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) estimation
If you are using MCMC estimation methods, we ask that you additionally cite:
Browne, W.J. (2009) MCMC Estimation in MLwiN v2.1. Centre for Multilevel Modelling, University of Bristol.[/i]
This information refers to MLwiN version 2.1. and to the MCMC guide of 2009, whereas I use the latest version of MLwiN (2.29) and the guide of Browne for MCMC estimation of 2012 (with MLwiN v2.25). Should the most recent information be cited?
Kind regards,
Sarah

Re: citing MLwiN 2.29
Hi Sarah,
Yes the official citations don't keep up with the MLwiN version numbers. I guess we don't want to keep tinkering with the official citation every time we do bug fixes and increment the MLwiN version number.
So please do use the official citations reported at
http://www.bristol.ac.uk/cmm/software/mlwin/refs.html
So you can write something like the following in your article
We fit all models using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods as implemented in the MLwiN multilevel modelling package (Browne, 2009; Rasbash et al., 2009). We have chosen to call MLwiN from within Stata using the runmlwin command (Leckie and Charlton, 2013).
Browne, W.J. (2009) MCMC Estimation in MLwiN v2.1. Centre for Multilevel Modelling, University of Bristol.
Leckie, G. and Charlton, C. (2013). runmlwin - A Program to Run the MLwiN Multilevel Modelling Software from within Stata. Journal of Statistical Software, 52 (11),1-40.
Rasbash, J., Charlton, C., Browne, W.J., Healy, M. and Cameron, B. (2009) MLwiN Version 2.1. Centre for Multilevel Modelling, University of Bristol.
I hope that helps
Best wishes
George
