I get an error message when I try to calculate level 2 residuals.(My data set contains missing values.)

"Numeric error(s) in calculate command. Affected entries replaced with system missing. See output window for details."

Then output window appears as follows.
"-->WEST
reallocating hierarchy"

Please someone help me on this problem.

Have you checked the residual output columns? It's possible that this error is due to a calculation problem with only one of the residual types and that the one that you are interested in was calculated correctly.

To check wither it's the missing values in the data set that are causing the problem you could try listwise deleting them before running the model to see whether you get the same error. It's possible that you have a level 2 unit where all the level 1 units are missing, which can sometimes trip up MLwiN.
